OC-267Marion Reef/Diamond Islets
Coral Sea Islands Territory North. It is NOT Mellish Reef, DXCC - just Australia.
Possibly (just possibly) I'll get a chance to quickly activate OC-160 on the way to there and back (5-6 hours each time at local night, probably 40 m cw only)
I've received a long-awaited call from the skipper that the trip to Marion Reef has been scheduled finally.
I'm not at all sure whether to get out with OC-160, as planned earlier.
Well, as a cherry on the cake -
The boat took a test trip to Marion reef a week ago. The reef is almost invisible - a high tides plus it has been well-worn by Debbie cyclone. All this will make my stay there bit more "interesting" - perhaps all 6 days will be spent sitting on the upper platform of the weather station.
Not the Scarborough reef, of course, but the motives are present.
How it looks like you may review here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7Ix9jQLqEg&t=405s
What to do with antennas in such case - I have no idea. There will be not enough space to install them...
But anyway - I'm going !...
Update on OC-267 Marion Reef IOTA DXpedition - STILL WAITING...
News are not perfect.
Whitsundays region has been devastated by Debbie cyclone (Category 4 out of 5, winds up to 270 km/h, extremely high tide and up to 500 mm of rain in an hour) few days ago. Airlie Beach where Norval boat had been moored, doesn't have power, water, mobile coverage as well as many and many suburbs/villages/sites around. Very limited supply of food. Many houses (including Airlie Beach marina) have been partially or totally destroyed. Just make a search for "Airlie Beach debbie" on internet.
I had a talk to Ron Murphy (skipper/owner of Norval) yesterday. Actually only reason to ring him was to get a confirmation he and his family are fine. People there have much more important things to worry about than someone's hobby.
The boat didn't sink but great repair work has to be done to get it back on track, as well as 3 dories.
However, Ron is looking for an opportunity to get to Marion Reef reasonably soon, possibly with other company's boat.
I'll keep you updated. The expedition hasn't been cancelled, just (possibly) postponed.
I will stay on the reef for 6 days alone as usual. Sorry, no internet access from there, just satphone for emergency case (hopefully won't be used for such purpose). Logs will be uploaded when back to mainland.
IC-7200 / 100w, 7 MHz GP, 14 MHz VDA, multiband dipole.
Your further support is much appreciated and just vital. Thank you very much for your generosity and trust.
GDXF and IREF are major sponsors of the DXpedition
