This year's inductees in the CQ CONTEST HALL OF FAME are - Tod Olson, K0TO: Tod is the founding editor of the National Contest Journal and has served the general amateur radio community as an ARRL Section Manager, Vice Director, Division Director and International Affairs Vice President - Richard Strand, KL7RA (SK): a radio astronomer taking advantage of the quiet of the northern latitudes for his research, Rich Strand built and maintained highly competitive contest stations in a very difficult environment and was, for many hams, their first (or only) CQ Zone 1 contact. PDXG DONATION TO NC1L ---> "As you may recall, after a life altering automobile accident in July, 2014 Bill Moore NC1L stepped down as the ARRL Awards Manager. Recently we learned that Bill was in need of a laptop computer. His current Windows laptop is quite old and very much out of date. He is using an iPhone and iPad but a Windows 10 laptop will be of great help in his recovery. Bill cannot use his fingers except in a very limited way and at that he has no strength. We hope this current technology laptop will be the foundation for development of an interface that allows Bill to use the Remote Ham Radio site with push buttons rather than mouse actions. This particular laptop was used on the TX3X Chesterfield Island DXpedition. The machine was refurbished by the Perseverance DX Group (www.pdxg.net), loaded with Windows 10 and presented to Bill by Les Kalmus W2LK. PDXG is extremely happy to have been able to help Bill on his long road to recovery". [TNX K5GS] PIRATE ---> 1A0KM was repeatedly pirated over the past few weeks. Genuine operations are publicized in advance and information is published on qrz.com, 1A0KM's QSL manager IK0FTA says. Do not waste your time and money working fakers and requesting direct cards for unannounced activities. QSL YB8OUN/P ---> This activity took place on 14-15 May from was Poat island (OC-213). QSL via YB8RW, preferably through the OQRS on Club Log (search for YB8OUN/P_POAT). WRTC 2018: SPONSORED TEAMS ---> "Sponsored teams are a long-standing tradition in WRTC and a substantial part for fundraising. It gives the chance to take part in the WRTC to dedicated contesters who cannot qualify because of serious commitments". The WRTC 2018 Organizing Committee is looking for applications for the first two sponsored teams beginning on 1 June - see the details on www.wrtc2018.de. WWFF ---> The "World Wide Flora and Fauna in Amateur Radio" aims to draw attention to the importance of protecting nature. In this spirit amateur radio operators set up and operate their radio stations from designated nature parks and protected nature areas - generating attention for these areas whilst giving the ham radio community an interesting activity to contact. WWFF is an international and non-commercial program run by the coordinators of a large number of Flora and Fauna national programmes. See http://wwff.co/ for omplete information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- QSLs received direct or through managers: 3C7A, 3DA0TM, 3XY1T (AF-051), 3XY5M, 4J3DJ, 4S7AB, 4W/DJ2EH, 4Z5IW, 5J0P (NA-033), 5V7TH, 5W0XG, 7X4AN, 8R1/K9KX, 8R1A, 9K2YM/p (AS-118), 9M0O, 9M2AX, A25UK, BU2AQ, C35U, C35US, C5FUD, D3AA, D3AM, D44TBO, D67GIA, FT4XU, GU4CHY, H44MS, J8/UA4CC, JA0RQV/6Y5, JT1CO, JT1DN, JT5DX, JV5A, JW/DL7DF, K3IMD, K5P, P29LL, P4/WJ2O, PG16ANT, PJ7/WJ2O, PW0FN, R15CWC/4, RC70YC, RI0BV/p (AS-042), RI0KV (AS-027), RI0PV (EU-085), RI0QV (AS-028), RI0QV/p (AS-029), RI1PA (EU-085), RI44ANT, RW3RN/HI7, S01WS, S9BK, SM1IRS (EU-020), SN20BKGZ, ST100S, T88RF, TI5/JT1CO, TK/SP7VC, TO2EE, TX7EU, TY1AA, VE1AI/m (NA-068), VE3KTB/VY0 (NA-008), VE7ACN/7 (NA-051 and NA-061), VK5MAV/6 (OC-243), VK6NAX/p (OC-164 and OC-183), VK9CK, VP8SGI, VP8STI, VU2CPL, W100AW,XU7TZG, YB4IR/7, YC8ROP, YN/WJ2O, ZD7W, ZD8AA, ZF2LC, ZY2QG (SA-071). **************************************************************************** 425 DX NEWS HOME PAGE: http://www.425dxn.org 425 DX NEWS MAGAZINE: http://www.425dxn.org/monthly **************************************************************************** 425 DX News is a free of charge weekly bulletin edited by Mauro Pregliasco, I1JQJ and Valeria Pregliasco, IK1ADH Its contents may be used, reproduced and distributed in part or full provided that "425 DX News" or "425DXN" receive proper credit Contributors are invited to send their DX information to Mauro Pregliasco, I1JQJ (425dxn@alice.it) The deadline is 12 UTC on Fridays **************************************************************************** Direttore Responsabile Gabriele Villa, I2VGW Giornalista Professionista - Tessera n. 071675 Ordine Nazionale dei Giornalisti Roma, Italia **************************************************************************** -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "425eng" group. CQ 2016 HALL OF FAMERS ---> CQ Magazine announced on 20 May the 2016 Hall
of Fame inductees. The CQ AMATEUR RADIO HALL OF FAME was established in
January 2001 to recognize individuals - radio amateurs or not - who
significantly affected the course of Amateur Radio, as well as radio
amateurs who have made significant contributions either to amateur radio,
to their professional careers or to some other aspect of life on our
planet. This year's inductees are:
- Bob Arnold, N2JEU (SK): co-developer (with Keith Lamonica, W7DXX, see
below) of the first internet-controlled remote base
- Grant Bingeman, KM5RG (SK): developed "method of moments" antenna
modeling software for AM broadcast stations and 160-meter amateur antennas
- Bob Carpenter, W3OTC (SK): pioneer of meteor scatter and FM stereo
broadcast technology; longtime AMSAT volunteer
- David Dary, W5ZAX: journalist, author, journalism educator - former
correspondent for CBS and NBC News, journalism professor at University of
Kansas and University of Oklahoma, author of over 20 books on the American
West
- Matt Ettus, N2MJI: software defined radio pioneer; developed first
Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) with GNU radio software support
- Terry Fox, WB4FJI: packet radio pioneer; primary developer of AX.25
amateur packet protocol
- Elmer "Bud" Frohardt, Jr., W9DY (SK): the original "Elmer" for whom ham
radio mentors are named (courtesy of a 1971 QST "How's DX?" column by Rod
Newkirk, W9BRD/VA3ZBB)
- Fred Gissoni, K4JLX (SK): adaptive technology pioneer; co-developer of
the Porta-Braille and Pocket-Braille note-taking devices for the visually
impaired, as well as many other devices
- Ken Kellerman, K2AOE: radioastronomer; pioneer of radio interferometry;
co-developer of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), which permits
multiple telescopes to function as a single instrument
- Keith Lamonica, W7DXX: co-developer (with the late Bob Arnold, N2JEU) of
the first internet-controlled remote base
- George Mitchell, K6ZE (SK): member of the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II
and 2007 recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal for his wartime service
- Les Mitchell, G3BHK (SK): founder of Jamboree on the Air (JOTA), annual
event to introduce amateur radio to scouts and guides around the world
- William Moerner, WN6I: co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Prize in chemistry
for his work in high-resolution microscopy
- Leigh Orf, KG4ULP: co-developer of tornado simulator using computer
modeling to simulate conditions under which tornadoes form
- Joe Rudi, NK7U: former Major League baseball player; 3-time All-Star
- Wes Schum, W9DYV (SK): co-founder of Central Electronics, developed first
commercially-manufactured amateur radio SSB transmitter
- Garry Shandling, ex-KQ6KA/KD6OY (SK): well-known comedian, actor, writer
and television personality
- Mason Southwirth, ex-W1VLH (SK): head of ARRL International Geophysical
Year (IGY) Propagation Research Project in 1958-59; conducted additional
propagation research at Stanford University
- Boris Stepanov, RU3AX (ex-UW3AX): leading Russian amateur, deputy editor
of Russian Radio magazine; pioneer of computerized contest logging and
log-checking; developed prototype for World Radiosport Team Championships
(WRTC); first to propose "glass cockpit" for ham transceiver, combining
frequency readout and spectrum scope on front panel display
- Rufus Turner, W3LF (SK): believed to be the first African-American radio
amateur in the U.S.; helped develop 1N34A diode; wrote 1949 article in
Radio-Electronics magazine on how to "Build a Transistor"
- Perry Williams, W1UED (SK): longtime ARRL Washington Coordinator and
League archivist; convinced Congress to approve vanity call sign program
and not to impose a license application fee on amateurs; persuaded FCC to
retain large amateur microwave allocations and to create primary amateur
allocation at 2.4 GHz
The CQ Contest Hall of Fame (established in 1986) and the CQ DX Hall of
Fame (established in 1967) honour those amateurs who not only excel in
personal performance in these major areas of amateur radio, but who also
"give back" to the hobby in outstanding ways.
This year's inductees in the CQ CONTEST HALL OF FAME are
- Tod Olson, K0TO: Tod is the founding editor of the National Contest
Journal and has served the general amateur radio community as an ARRL
Section Manager, Vice Director, Division Director and International
Affairs Vice President
- Richard Strand, KL7RA (SK): a radio astronomer taking advantage of the
quiet of the northern latitudes for his research, Rich Strand built and
maintained highly competitive contest stations in a very difficult
environment and was, for many hams, their first (or only) CQ Zone 1
contact.
The 2016 inductees to the CQ DX HALL OF FAME are
- Nigel Jolly and the Crew of the RV Braveheart: Jolly and his crew (and
ship) have provided transportation for - and assured the safety of - many
of the major DXpeditions to southern islands in the past 15 years,
DXpeditions that likely would not otherwise have taken place.
- Roger Balister, G3KMA: as manager of the Islands on the Air program since
1985, Roger has seen IOTA grow from a few hundred early participants to
more than 10,000 today, making it one of the most popular award programs
in amateur radio.
PDXG DONATION TO NC1L ---> "As you may recall, after a life altering
automobile accident in July, 2014 Bill Moore NC1L stepped down as the ARRL
Awards Manager.
Recently we learned that Bill was in need of a laptop computer. His current
Windows laptop is quite old and very much out of date. He is using an
iPhone and iPad but a Windows 10 laptop will be of great help in his
recovery. Bill cannot use his fingers except in a very limited way and at
that he has no strength. We hope this current technology laptop will be the
foundation for development of an interface that allows Bill to use the
Remote Ham Radio site with push buttons rather than mouse actions.
This particular laptop was used on the TX3X Chesterfield Island DXpedition.
The machine was refurbished by the Perseverance DX Group (www.pdxg.net),
loaded with Windows 10 and presented to Bill by Les Kalmus W2LK. PDXG is
extremely happy to have been able to help Bill on his long road to
recovery". [TNX K5GS]
PIRATE ---> 1A0KM was repeatedly pirated over the past few weeks. Genuine
operations are publicized in advance and information is published on
qrz.com, 1A0KM's QSL manager IK0FTA says. Do not waste your time and money
working fakers and requesting direct cards for unannounced activities.
QSL YB8OUN/P ---> This activity took place on 14-15 May from was Poat
island (OC-213). QSL via YB8RW, preferably through the OQRS on Club Log
(search for YB8OUN/P_POAT).
WRTC 2018: SPONSORED TEAMS ---> "Sponsored teams are a long-standing
tradition in WRTC and a substantial part for fundraising. It gives the
chance to take part in the WRTC to dedicated contesters who cannot qualify
because of serious commitments". The WRTC 2018 Organizing Committee is
looking for applications for the first two sponsored teams beginning on 1
June - see the details on www.wrtc2018.de.
WWFF ---> The "World Wide Flora and Fauna in Amateur Radio" aims to draw
attention to the importance of protecting nature. In this spirit amateur
radio operators set up and operate their radio stations from designated
nature parks and protected nature areas - generating attention for these
areas whilst giving the ham radio community an interesting activity to
contact. WWFF is an international and non-commercial program run by the
coordinators of a large number of Flora and Fauna national programmes. See
http://wwff.co/ for omplete information.
